Radically Open Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
Radically Open Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (RO-DBT) is founded by Dr. Thomas R. Lynch. It is an evidence based treatment that targets excessive self-control. Otherwise know as over-control. Self control is the ability to control simultaneous urges, desires, impulses, behaviours, and delay gratification to reach future goals. Sometimes too much of something is not good. Over-control is linked to emotional loneliness; an absence of social connectedness with others. This can result in chronic depression and/or anxiety, anorexia nervosa, or obsessive compulsive personality disorder. You can listen to Dr. Lynch talk about it here.
According to this framework, emotional well-being is defined as:
Openness to new experiences and feedback in order to learn, despite the discomfort.
Flexibility in our responses to the changing environments and demands
Social connectedness to have intimacy in meaningful, long-lasting relationships
RO-DBT treatment aims to enhance:
Abilities to flexibly adapt to our ever changing surroundings
Authentic and context appropriate emotional expression and non verbal prosocial behaviours that are associated to social intimacy
Healthy self-doubt: the willingness to question our perceptions or believes when challenged without falling apart in order to learn and remain in intimate relationship
And to lessen rigidity by engaging in new behaviours
Perhaps you can relate to most of these characteristics: avoiding novelty and risks, rule adherent, values structure/routine, cautious, plans ahead, struggles to build deep connections, or has a hard time relaxing or being playful. If so, perhaps RO-DBT is the answer.
